What to wear for a photo shoot

What you wear for your photo shoot is important. It doesn’t matter if it’s a simple headshot, a family or band photo or new images for your website - picking the right outfit will make a difference to the final result.

Before a shoot people will often say ‘oh I’ll have to get some new outfits! ’. Trust me, you won’t.

Most of us own far more clothes than we will ever wear and you will definitely have the right outfit already. Do yourself, your wallet and the environment a favour and make the most of what you have in your wardrobe.

Here’s my best advice:

  1. Pick a block colour or two that suits you. Try to avoid anything too patterned or with logos as it may date your images. Think about the style of photograph you are trying to create. If you want to look modern, fun and approachable maybe avoid that crisp white shirt (and tie)…

  2. If you’re getting ready for a family or group photo, think about whether the colours you are wearing compliment each other. This doesn’t mean you should wear matching outfits! But choosing clothes from a nice colour palette will be really effective.

  3. If you’re really not feeling anything you already own, try having a clothes swap with your mates. They are honestly so much fun and a great way to refresh your look. Give those clothes you never wear away to a good home.

And failing all that if you’re still struggling I’m always more than happy to rummage in your wardrobe to find the perfect look, as many of my previous clients will know ; )

I have not taken inspiration from fashion shows. I don’t even really go to too many of the fashion shows – and have not for 15 years – because I don’t want to be inspired by the same things as everyone else. If everyone is inspired by the same things, then, of course, you all do the same pictures.
